Norte Maar for Collaborative Projects in the Arts creates, promotes and presents collaborations in the disciplines of visual, literary, and the performing arts: connecting visual artists, choreographers, composers, writers and other originating artists with venues and each other.

Socrates Sculpture Park, internationally recognized for its large-scale sculpture and multi-media installations, partners with Norte Maar, renowned for their cross-disciplinary collaborative projects, in a new summer series bringing New York based choreographers and their dancers to Socrates. Each week during the month of August, a new choreographer will be in residence at the part making new dances on site in full view of the public who will witness the working process of these dance makers and experience fully produced performance every weekend, Saturdays at 3pm.

Visitors to the park will enjoy not only the unique contemporary sculpture the park is well known for, but also cutting edge dance and movement in the making. A related public project will offered to young choreographers (details to follow). A special stage will be built for this 4-week series.

This exhibition, the first of its kind to showcase exclusively the dance archive of Brooklyn photographer Julie Lemberger, highlights dance in New York from the early 90s to today. The show features portraits and documents of works by some of the great dance luminaries including Trisha Brown, Merce Cunningham, Mark Morris, Gus Solomons Jr, and Twyla Tharp, as well as those near and dear to New Yorkers like Ann Carlson, Sean Curran, David Dorfman, Doug Elkins, Desmond Richardson, Edisa Weeks, with a rare portrait of UK transplant Christopher Wheeldon. The dance companies featured include Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theater, Ballet Hispanico, Dance Theater of Harlem, Lucinda Childs, Limón Dance Company, and Stephen Petronio Company, among others.

Curator Jason Andrew brings together forty-five artists born over the last century who happen to be women. Every encounter with a work by Alberto Giacometti whether it is a drawing, painting or sculpture, provides an opportunity to access the strength and sincerity that embodies all great Modern art. This special exhibition features a double sided drawing by the great modern master viewed in context with a selection of ten contemporary artists.

For John Silvis, Crashcourse IV continues to explore crashed car imagery in art as existential metaphor. Referencing Andy Warhol’s crash photo silk-screens and John Chamberlain’s large twisted car sculptures. In Crash Assemblages, two perpendicular triangles made of MDF are combined with felt, the artist’s designed wallpaper, tape drawings, a Plexiglas car silhouette, and a shelf suspending a car part object. The installation sights societies continuing saga with car culture and the ongoing romance with escapism.

Bruce Dow transforms modern industrial objects that have been found, collected or acquired. Display stands, floor jacks, racetracks, panton colors, and Eames chairs are reclaimed, reshaped, and represented in, not necessarily an entirely new context. Adopting forms and riding the boundary between industrial product and fine art, Dow’s works range from small objects, to furniture, to architecture. Drawing is a very integral part of his process, modifying form, adjusting scale, and inserting color.

CounterPointe, is dedicated to presenting the latest experimental, innovative, risk-taking choreography that shows a depth of investment in ballet by women dance makers working with the pointe shoe. In response to the continual neglect of representation of women ballet choreographers in major ballet companies (notably, the Royal Ballet has not commissioned a work from a female choreographer for the Opera House stage since 1999) this series offers a performances ripe with the latest curated works by women who make dances with the pointe shoe.

In celebration of the centennial of John Cage, Norte Maar will collaborates with Experiments in Art and Technology ( E. A. T.) to present Cage Transmitted: 12 evenings of performance. The evenings, occurring once each month and spanning the calendar year of 2012, will include music, poetry, theater, happenings, visual art, and dance.
