From the Six Zones of BOS: Hoarders, Hotel, and The Bureau of Self-Recognition

This is the biggest one yet!!! BOS2013 features 598 registered spaces with a map that divides them into six zones stretching the geographic lines which make up the creative neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn. We spent our Memorial Day Weekend studying yet another year’s daunting event program and came up with a relatively short survey of events, exhibitions, and studios that should not be missed… or at least those that we’ll not miss!Events:Official 2013 Launch Party@ Shea Stadium, 20 Meadow Str, Fri, May 31, 8pm-2amThe Official Bushwick Open Studios Launch Party is a one-night celebration composed entirely of local talent, showcasing music by Brooklyn favorites: Eula, Lodro, and Darlings. Stop by Bushwick longest running apartment gallery, Norte Maar, have a morning mimosa with us, meet up with your art posse and grab your maps. While there check out the exhibition Portraits of Fern featuring paintings, drawings, sculpture and installations celebrating one of Bushwick’s most beloved dogs, Fern.Community Mural Launch Party@ Moore Street Market, 110 Moore Str, Sat, Jun 1, 12pm-5pmCelebrate the unveiling of a new public mural in the outdoor aquaponic farm space at La Marqueta de Williamsburg. Artist and Bushwick resident, Miriam Castillo and students from the Beacon Center for Arts and Leadership, developed the mural titled “How Does Food Unite People”. The event will feature live music and of course foods from the market. For another kid friendly event check out Rockit Boy (1009 Broadway, #203) featuring kids' sticker art. Most of which has never been seen! Expect the wall covered in art, tables stacked with books on magick and poetry that’s been published by roommates, plus a variety of handmade jewelry in addition to an art making station. We can’t wait to get lost in this totality!Zone 2 / BOS#202What I Like About You @ Parallel Art Space, 1717 Troutman, rm#220This show, organized by artist Julie Torres, invites 19 international artists to Bushwick to select one work from a Brooklyn artist, and show that work alongside their own. As Bushwick has quickly become an international artist’s mecca with artists from around the globe flocking here to connect creatively, we look forward to meeting a totally new group of artists while celebrating a few of our own. Expect a meticulous presentation of art and terrific views from the third floor. Stop by and be prepared to loose yourself in his "rabbit hole" studio.Zone 5 / BOS#177Studio of Liv Mette Larsen386 Jefferson, Ground flrLiv found a garage complete with a dusty old Cadillac to exhibit twenty paintings inspired by the Bushwick skyline as seen from the artist's studio.Zone 5 / BOS#180Studio of Andrew Szobody Studio of Natalie Simon382 Jefferson Street (btwn Wyckoff + Irving)We’ve been following both artists for quite some time. Both artists have been working feverishly and well under the radar. Andrew does these labor intense drawings and sculpture while Natalie does painting and sculpture addressing themes of information, language and society. Both artists function within a conceptual framework.Zone 5 / BOS#219Studio of Amery Kessler and Mary Jane Ward1710 Himrod (btwn Himrod + Seneca Ave)This studio pushes more than just the geographic borders. For those of you that need a history lesson, Chloë was one of the few amazing individuals, which included neighborhood great Laura Braslow, who way back when integrated themselves into the resident Bushwick community.
