This Spring, Norte Maar brings forth CounterPointe 6, a collaboration between seven female dance makers and seven visual artists. The performances will take place at downtown Brooklyn’s Actors Fund Arts Center from April 13-15. Tickets here. Norte Maar, a committed international think-tank dedicated to the creation, promotion, and presentation of collaborations in the disciplines of the visual, literary, and the performing arts, together with Brooklyn Ballet, present CounterPointe. This annual curated performance series features new work by women choreographers for pointe. For this, its sixth iteration, 6 women choreographers have been paired with seven New York Metro-based women visual artists to collaborate and create both a new physical and visual work by each – investigating the process of creation, inspiration and development.

CounterPointe will present collaborations by Courtney Cochran with artist Melissa Dadourian, American Ballet Theater corps de ballet member Zhongjing Fang with artist Audra Wolowiec, Donna Salgado with artist Liz Atz, Dasha Schwartz with artist Lindsay Packer, konverjdans with artist Priscilla Fusco, Eryn Renee Young with artist Jeri Coppola, and series curatorJulia K. Gleich (Gleich Dances) with artist Karen Schifano. Curiously, Karen Schifano shares a historic connection with Julia Gleich. Karen and Julia, who had never met, discovered that Karen's mother, Natalie Schifano, was Julia's Hastings High School art teacher.

Inaugurated in 2012 CounterPointe is focused on the presentation of new works by women choreographers for the pointe shoe. The series has been celebrated for breaking new ground expanding the ballet concert vocabulary, investigating new and historic territory, encouraging discussion and creating a forum for women, young or old, emerging or established, to take artistic risks.

"This is Norte Maar's 6th year producing the work of women artists, and the third year of new and exceptional collaborations which involve pointework. Every year it is my unique opportunity to witness the development of these new works which celebrate a range of artistic approaches to ballet. And each year the submissions get better and better. We have been quietly continuing to promote new work, creating opportunities to innovate, and supporting artistic collaborations for 13 years."-Julia K. About Julia K. Gleich:

Julia K. Gleich, curator and choreographer, is a critically acclaimed choreographer, teacher, scholar interested in re-contextualizing ballet. Her company, Gleich Dances performed in the UK and US including seasons at The Broadway Theatre, Barking (Arts Council England-supported), NYC’s Joyce SoHo and Centre for Performance Research with critical notice in The New York Times, Village Voice, The New Criterion and The Brooklyn Rail. She was commissioned to create a site-specific work for the opening of St. Pancras International Eurostar station in 2007. Collaboration is a key part of her creativity. In 2004 she co-founded with curator, Jason Andrew, Norte Maar for Collaborative Projects in the Arts in Brooklyn, NY, named by Jerry Saltz as “..the closest thing to the eighties East Village.” Her practice-based research on vectors and dance was published in the Dynamic Body in Space. Her conceptual dance films have been exhibited in NYC, and Singapore. She is an advocate for women in ballet, producing annual CounterPointe performances in NY and London and mentors young choreographers each summer in Dance at Socrates in NYC. Ms. Gleich is Head of Choreography at London Studio Centre and faculty at Trinity Laban. Her training included: School of American Ballet, the Limón Institute and Cunningham Studio. She has been on faculties of several universities in the US and received the Distinguished Alumna Award 2014from the University of Utah Fine Arts. She was External Examiner, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, and Master teacher, Hikone Dance Intensive, Japan. In 2016 she was awarded a DanceUK Choreographer Observership through English National Ballet.
