Bushwick Open Studios returns!
The 9th installment of Arts in Bushwick's annual weekend featuring open studios, exhibitions and performance. At press time there were over 500 online registered events. We worked over the very user friendly Arts in Bushwick website and compiled Norte Maar’s 2015 list of not to miss events, studios, artist curated exhibitions, alternative spaces and performances… or at least those that we don't wanna miss!!!! Here are our 2015 must-sees!
Advisory: Far from the intimate engagement with artists in their studios, enormous unavoidable block parties have come to define BOS. It's our hope that our must-sees will help our loyal and supportive audience navigate through the expanding Corporate Sponsored Swarms. Our selection focuses on artists new and familiar, spaces that might be unfamiliar to most and caught our imagination. Those exhibitions with collaborative elements obviously top our chart.

Maps-N-Mimosas

This event has been the obvious tops for eight years running. Stop by Bushwick’s longest running apartment gallery, Norte Maar, have a morning mimosa with us, meet up with your art posse and grab your maps. While there, check out Hecho en Bushwick, an exhibition featuring over thirty Bushwick/Ridgewood artists celebrating NM's 9th BOS. The exhibit will be on view during BOS weekend from 11am-7pm. Also on view will be an ambitious site specific installation by Carlton Scott Sturgill that includes over 900 handmade roses cut from Ralph Lauren polo shirts. BOS 2015 Community Day

Produced with generous support from Blick Art Materials, Community Day is a family-friendly event for neighbors and visitors to learn more about the Bushwick community, and the many valuable services and programs that local organizations offer. Coinciding with the opening of the Bushwick Farmers’ Market season, this year’s event focuses on the intersection of Arts & Wellness. Featuring visual art, agriculture, dance, hip-hop, spoken-word, theater, yoga, performance art, music and much more, it is the goal of AiB to provide a space for Bushwick community organizations, artists, individuals and not-for-profits to showcase their incredible talents and programs through interactive projects during Bushwick Open Studios. This Tel Aviv-born artist is most known for her large and immersive environmental installations. You can be sure that she’ll have something ambitious on view, but be sure to check out her collages.
Natalie Simon

Simon is interested in how we seek patterns, symbols and relationships to predict behavior, choice and memory. The aim is to use signs, symbols and motifs to create imagery that is artificial and unexpected while at the same time familiar and convincing. If you miss her studio, she has a major piece in Norte Maar’s between a place and candy, on view through June 12 here.
Julia Sinelnikova

Sinelnikova has been a rising figure in the New York nightlife mounting large scale light sculptures and unique performances at alternative venues. Check out her sculpture as well as her handmade jewelry. Also, the view outside the studio window is amazing.
Ryan Michael Ford

Yes, we know that we’ve featured Ford three years running but that’s how good his paintings are. His imagination seems never ending as he remains one of the most intriguing and technically gifted artists of the Bushwick art scene.

Godzilla, the Japanese Gojiro, has found its way into Dow’s new drawings. Go see them and see how they fit into this sculptor’s modernistic reclamation of Eames fiberglass shell chairs.

Common Room is the second installment of a series of curatorial projects curated by Björn Meyer-Ebrecht in his studio. It follows last year's Communal Table, in which he built an over-sized table that served as the shared base for sculptures by 12 artists. The current installation continues his interest in functional architectural objects and represents the first time he has created a sculpture that functions as usable space. Artists include: Eric Brown, Sharon Butler, Paul Gagner, Jule Korneffel, Esperanza Mayobre, David McBride, Adam Parker Smith and Jenny Vogel

What do you get when you cross fashion with sculpture, and some architects, a sound artist and more sculptors? Find out in Fred Frelinghuysen’s show that showcases the interdisciplinary imaginations of local sculptors, musicians, makers and performers that examine multi-disciplinary strategies for adopting, adapting and creating; resulting in transgressions of form, craft and the resulting ideas that arise out of watered down, misguided, and at times humorous interpretations of media, tools, techniques and traditions. Artists include Greg Climer, Hee Chan Kim, Angelo Jones, Jonathan Niederer, Andrew Cornell Robinson, Brett Sroka and Brian Andrew Whiteley.

Neo-Craftivism

Co-organized by artists Rachael Gorchov, Roxanne Jackson and Robin Kang, Neo-Craftivism is an expansion of the term coined by contemporary crafter and activist, Betsy Greer. A single word designed to merge craft and social activism, identifying a movement that, in line with the Third-wave feminist movement, utilized craft as subversive. This crew takes it to the next level. See works by Sarah Bednarek, Rachael Gorchov, Roxanne Jackson, Robin Kang, Katerina Lanfranco, Heidi Lau, Rebecca Morgan, Courtney Puckett and Nichole Van Beek.

Oliver and Jessica have participated in Bushwick Open Studios since it’s first “open to all” festival in 2006. It's an inspiring space showcasing local artists and celebrate the creativity of Bushwick artists including Ellen Letcher, Jennifer Sullivan, Stephen Truax, Matthew Miller, Oliver + Jessica Ralli, Carla Avruch, Julie Torres, Deborah Hilert, Timothy Hull, Aaron Kreiswirth, KKory Trolio, Nora Petroulinas among others.
Bushwick Community Darkroom: Coming Home

BCD celebrates its 4th birthday and its new expanded home on Troutman Street with an exhibit of photography by BCD members Scott Nyerges, Sam Margevicious, Caleb Savage, Genevieve Snow and darkroom founder Lucia Rollow (plus others!). Come visit the show, take a tour of the new black-and-white and color printing and processing labs, and become a member!

Not part of the official BOS, but we couldn't not list this. BOS is all about community, and this exhibition has it all: art, community garden, music, ducks and chickens! Curated by Ben La Rocco, Linnea Paskow and Ben Pritchard this show features paintings in trees and in other nooks and crannies around the public garden.

With many exciting things in the works, details will soon be released of PERFORMANCY FORUM: CACHE IN - an event which will take place between June 5-7 and will include any works dealing with Cache/cash/capitalism and art. CACHE is value given to something, something that deserves to be hoarded or mediated due to its high desirability. "Cache" synonyms include: hideout, hoardings, repository, stash, stockpile, wealth, accumulations, hierlooms, treasures, wealth, assets, kittys, supplies, treasury, drop joint, hiding place.
