Lattice Views - The Highland Park Mural

Norte Maar’s 3rd local mural was designed by Elisabeth Condon and executed in collaboration with artists Angel Garcia, Paulapart, Kiana Vega, Estefania Velez-Rodriguez, and assisted by Prince D. White, Karl Kelly, Cole Bespalko, and Jessie Glaser.

“Lattice Views,” 2022, appears above the tennis courts at Lower Highland Park, Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, NY. Photos by Laura Nova.

Lattice Views flanks the handball court in lower Highland Park. Gold lattice spreads over deep green walls, merging garden and interior.  Pigeons alight on elegant wide staircases that replicate those nearby. Poppies and tulips from the community garden and daffodils at the shipping containers grow from the lattice. Bicycles and tennis balls reflect outdoor activities nearby, reshuffling visual impressions that heighten the park experience. Trees above the wall are pulled into the design and altered, uniting nature with the built environment.

The mural extends my approach to landscape as an artificial construction simultaneously real and fake into the park. It combines and recombines elements from the park in a rhythmic, scroll-like arrangement. It channels a sensory, synesthetic experience of place that expands the sojourns through landscape depicted in Chinese scrolls into Brooklyn.

Lattice Views, 2022. Norte Maar Mural Initiative #3, Highland Park. Left wall: 11’ height x 121’ width; Right wall: 8’ height x 141.5’ width.

Lattice Views joins the Norte Maar Mural Initiative which introduces the local community to artists that live and work in the neighborhood and beyond as an extension of the regular gallery exhibitions in Cypress Hills. High graffiti sites and areas in need of inspiration are identified, and artists take inspiration from the community to create site-sensitive designs.

The Lattice Views team includes Elisabeth Condon, Lead Artist/Designer, Kiana Vega, Paula Part, Angel Garcia, and Estefania Velez Rodriguez, assisted by Prince D. White, Karl Kelly, Cole Bespalko, and Jessie Glaser. This third mural in Cypress Hills, follows murals at 128 Pine Street and Crescent Street at Fulton. Lattice Views is produced by Norte Maar with contributions by Golden Paintworks and support from the NYPD NCOs and Explorers. Lattice Views was organized by Julia Gleich, Norte Maar Co-Founder, Norte Maar Board President Melissa Trasky, and Elizabeth Masella, Senior Public Art Coordinator for NYC Parks with NYC Parks Foundation.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council (District 37).
