Artist Statement - Crescent Street Mural Design
In the midst of growing up in New York City, I’ve always looked for fragments of nature. When the warm weather resurfaces after harsh winters, it’s almost a miracle that nature can resurrect. Just as fast as the leaves fell from the trees, they grew once more and provided shade. When we take time to admire the beauty of nature, we begin to see it as a mirror. There is beauty in observing and being the observer. Being able to design a mural with this concept in mind, I hoped to create an experience that could be enjoyed by everyone in my Cypress Hills community.
There are dozens of different species of bees within Brooklyn. The Brown-Belted Bumble Bee species is featured stylistically on the mural, along with variations of different sunflowers. Unfortunately, there are no current sunflower fields in any of the five boroughs and sometimes gardens seem far and few. There is much ecological value to having bees and plants present in our urban environment. Perhaps through the artistic representation of these species and landscapes, we can inspire others to embrace nature and incorporate it more into our communities. This was the design and conceptual inspiration behind the Crescent Street mural.
