Lan SatBattle of Plattsburgh Monumentevenings of Jul 2, 3 , 5-9, 2004Plattsburgh, NY_________Norte Maar for Collaborative Projects in the Arts in affiliation with the city of Plattsburgh is pleased to announce the video projection 'Lan Sat' created by Ryan J. Wilson of Peru, NY. Mr. Wilson's film will be projected from the roof of city hall onto the westward side of the Battle of Plattsburgh monument as part of the on-going Mayor's Cup festivities. 'Lan Sat' will be seen on the evenings of July 2,3,5-9, 2004 on the monument at City Hall Place and Clinton Street in historic downtown Plattsburgh beginning at 9:00pm.'Lan Sat' is the creation of video artist Ryan J. Wilson. Mr. Wilson, who graduated with a degree in art from the Maryland Institute of Art, has created this film using actual footage from Gemini 19, NASA's October 1968 manned lunar orbit mission. Mr. Wilson has edited and reformatted the footage he obtained through the National Archives & Records Administration, Washington. D.C. The imagery spans the landscape of the earth from the perspective of space. This will be a silent film with no audio.Artist Ryan J. Wilson describes the purpose behind his project, "With the acceleration of technology and globalization, much of our society is forgetting to look back into history to build a stronger, brighter future. The Gemini footage released by NASA was received with awe and wonder in 1968. The incredible view of the earth from space initially gave people on this planet something to think about, yet beginning a discovery of the near past, it has already lost its impact. Today, this footage is antiquated and dated."Jason Andrew, founder of Norte Maar, adds "The Lan San Project focuses on the impact of art within our local culture and also takes into account new ideas in art, like video, that are internationally common, yet not presented or recognized locally. The Battle of Plattsburgh Monument stands as an important reminder of the War of 1812 and the significance of the role Plattsburgh played in the war. Today, many of us pass by the site without much thought or attention. The Lan San project attempts to bring a remembrance/meaning back into the significance and purpose of history and encourage an audience not only to remember but also to imagine. This project is very unique for Plattsburgh and I would like to thank the city of Plattsburgh, and especially Councilman Bill Sabourin, and the Mayor Daniel Stewart for their support of this project."
