Another July in the ADK!
Another Adirondack Summer! As Norte Maar continues to be a leading force in Brooklyn, many may not realize that the organization was originally founded on the shores of Lake Champlain in the summer of 2004 by curator Jason Andrew and choreographer Julia K. Gleich, playing a major role in revitalizing the arts in the North Country from 2004-2010. Through exhibitions at the farmhouse in Rouses Point and ballet performances in a converted ice rink at the Civic Center, Norte Maar became a signature advocate and presenter of the visual, literary, and performing arts connecting an emerging artistic community within the North Country.

Bushwick Open Studios returns! The 9th installment of Arts in Bushwick's annual weekend featuring open studios, exhibitions and performance. At press time there were over 500 online registered events. We worked over the very user friendly Arts in Bushwick website and compiled Norte Maar’s 2015 list of not to miss events, studios, artist curated exhibitions, alternative spaces and performances… or at least those that we don't wanna miss!!!! Game on! NM announces its plans for BOS 2015!
Bushwick, Brooklyn - Norte Maar is pleased to participate in the 2015 Arts in Bushwick annual Bushwick Open Studios and Arts Festival. A cultural phenomenon, BOS2015 takes place Friday, June 5 – Sunday, June 7, 2015 and includes over 500 individual studios, shows, and exhibitions involving thousands of artists. This free event invites visual artists, performers, musicians, designers, and the public to celebrate creative expression in one of the most vital arts districts in the world.
CounterPointe Shorts: London Edition - Meet the Choreographers
London, UK – Norte Maar's co-founder Julia Gleich, together with Briar Adams and the Conway Collective bring CounterPointe Shorts to London, England on Thursday 7 of May 2015 in London’s Conway Hall, Camden. CounterPointe Shorts will present works by series curator Julia K. Gleich (Gleich Dances), and Briar Adams (Hack Ballet) as well as new works by Sophie Adams and Aisling Cook (Ballet Ensemble London), Genevieve Grady, Deborah Kate Norris from Manchester and Elisabeth Schilling from Germany. There will be a post-performance discussion led by Antonia Franceschi who is well known for her master teaching, choreography and her career as a dancer with New York City Ballet and other companies, as well as her role in the movie "Fame."

Two new publications from Norte Maar!
Continuing its dedication to the literary arts, Norte Maar is please to announce the publication of two new literary volumes feature the collaboration between writers and visual artists. A Modicum of Mankind: new short stories by John Talbird with illustrations by Leslie Kerby. and Tobacco Hour: collaboration between poet Dara Mandle and artist Brece Honeycutt. A reading and book signing will be held at Luhring Augustine Bushwick (25 Kinckerbocker Avenue, Bushwick) on Sunday, April 19 at 4pm. Seated is first come basis. On view at Luhring Augustine: Philip Taaffe, new paintings.
NM's CounterPointe returns: new choreography by women for pointe
Coming this April, Norte Maar in collaboration with Brooklyn Ballet presents CounterPointe, the annual curated performance series featuring women choreographers making new work on pointe. CounterPointe is an annual performance series dedicated to presenting the latest experimental, innovative, risk-taking choreography that shows a depth of investment in ballet by women dance makers working with the pointe shoe. Investigating new and old territory the series highlights new work, opening up discussion, and creating a forum for women, young or old, emerging or established, to take risks.
NM and Microscope present Burckhardt Film Series in celebration of Edith Schloss.
Norte Maar and Microscope Gallery collaborate to present and evening of Burckhardt Films at Microscope Gallery (1329 Willoughby Avenue, Brooklyn), Saturday, March 21 at 7:30pm. The series will feature the world premiere of Jacob Burckhardt's film Happy Holi, shot in Sri Lanka capturing a vibrant dance party celebrating the Hindu Holi festival of colors. The evening will also feature a 1955 film by Rudy Burckhardt as well as film of Edith Schloss, the subject of a major retrospective now on view at Sundaram Tagore Gallery, leading a tour of her apartment where she vividly describes her own paintings, her career and her vast knowledge of American and European art history and mythology, past and present.
Light installations by Julia Sinelnikova headlines NM's Beat Nite after party!
Headlining Norte Maar's big Beat Nite after party will be light installation by Brooklyn based artist Julia Sinelnikova. Say hello to Heath at the door grab a beer from Brooklyn Brewery then enjoy Julia's elaborate light installations inspired by supernatural imagery while you dance the night away to the tunes of DJ jojoSOUL Julia's installation will remain on view at the Vazquez (93 Forrest Street) for Armory Weekend, Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8, 2-7pm.
NM's Beat Nite Returns! March 6!
Bushwick’s premiere non-profit arts organization, Norte Maar, presents its 12th installment of Beat Nite, Friday, March 6. Heralded as the most underground, exciting, and fiercely independent, Beat Nite is a late night Bushwick-wide gallery night. This edition is curated by critic Ben Sutton and features a range of the alternative and established. Don’t miss the art and the after party hosted by The Vazquez.
NM announces major exhibition featuring: pattern + repetition + motif
Norte Maar is pleased to present a major exhibition surveying new work in pattern, repetition and motif titled "between a place and candy: new works in pattern + repetition + motif." The exhibition will be held at 1285 Avenue of the Americas Art Gallery (btwn51st and 52nd Street, NYC) and will open with a public reception on Monday, March 16 from 6-8pm. The show will continue through June 12 with gallery hours Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm. This exhibition continues Norte Maar’s mission of re-presenting and supporting the advancement of innovative and transgressive work of both emerging, mid-career and historic artists.
NM announces major retrospective of Edith Schloss (1919-2011)
Norte Maar is pleased to announce its collaboration with Sundaram Tagore Gallery to present a landmark retrospective of work by Edith Schloss (1919-2011), one of America’s greatest expatriate artists whose paintings, assemblage, collage, watercolors and drawings border on the bittersweet, fragile, intimate and naïve. Intrinsically linked to the milieu of Postwar American Art, every aspect of the artist’s eccentric personal iconography will be on view for rediscovery. This is the first show of the artist’s work in New York in twenty-five years.
NM Announces Call for Young Choreographers for Dance at Socrates 2015
Norte Maar, in collaboration with Socrates Sculpture Park, invites young choreographers ages 13-18 to apply for one week of mentorship in August, as together, they make new choreography for performance during Dance at Socrates: a residency and performance program that invites New York-based choreographers and their dancers to a develop a site-specific dancework in a unique waterfront environment.

NM’s Brooklyn Combine feeds a firestorm opinion and a call for the Brooklyn Museum to do more for local artists.
A month after Norte Maar's hugely successful Brooklyn Performance Combine at the Brooklyn Museum, the event is being recognized for its celebration of Brooklyn based artists and performers. Critic, James Panero in his monthly column in The New Criterion, juxtaposed the inclusive nature of the event with the seemingly exclusive even divisive omission of artists in the Brooklyn Museum's current exhibition Crossing Brooklyn.

NM opens historic print exhibition Jennifer Melby Editions at Schema Projects.
Jennifer Melby Editions: 18 Years of Intaglio Prints, is the first exhibition offering a cohesive look at the collaborative exchange between artists and master printer Jennifer Melby. The exhibition offers a glimpse at the publishing history of Melby featuring stunning prints by artists Tom Burckhardt, Joanne Greenbaum, Red Grooms, Paul Mogensen, Robert Moskowitz, Andrew Spence, Craig Taylor, and Nicola Tyson. It also features a selection of commissioned work, including editions Melby has produced with the artists Donald Baechler, Julia Jacquette, Sol LeWitt, Brice Marden, Dorothea Tanning, and others.
It was EPIC !!! NM's Brooklyn Performance Combine storms the Brooklyn Museum
The Brooklyn Performance Combine will easily go down as Norte Maar's most ambitious event to date. We know we use the word a lot, but this time we can certainly call the event E P I C as the two-hour durational event at the Brooklyn Museum included 2 DJ's, 5 poets, 10 visual artists, 11 performing artists and William Powhida! The Brooklyn Performance Combine was “certainly one of our most successful programs ever in that Beaux-Arts Court," said the Brooklyn Museum.
