Fresh Faces and New Spaces at NM’s Beat Nite

When Norte Maar began it’s Bushwick based art projects in 2006, the neighborhood was a fledgling arts community—everything was new and each endeavor was a risk. Artists and Lovers: Paris 1900-1930an afternoon salon with Julie MartinSun, Feb 10, 4pm at Norte MaarIn celebration of Valentine's Day and in conjunction with our current exhibition Giacometti and a selection of contemporary drawings, Norte Maar presents and afternoon salon with Julie Martin, co-author of Kiki's Paris: Artists and Lovers, Sunday, February 10 at 4pm.In Paris during the early 1900s, the bohemian lifestyle cultivated a flourishing era of artistic freedom and innovation. From 1900 to 1930, Montparnasse was the center of artistic life for the whole world. Alice Ernestine Prin (1901-1953), also known as Kiki de Montparnasse, was in the center of it all—singing in nightclubs, modeling for artists in makeshift studios, discussing life over wine and cigarettes, meeting up at cafés and fashioning friendships with some of the most influential creative minds in modern art such as Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, and Diego Rivera. For this special afternoon, Julie Martin will talk about this influential time in Paris, the extraordinary life of Kiki, and a bit about the young Alberto Giacometti.

Alberto Giacometti comes to Bushwick.

Norte Maar is pleased to present Giacometti and a selection of contemporary drawings, January 26-February 24, 2013. The exhibition features a single drawing (double sided) by the great modern master Alberto Giacometti. The work is on loan from a private collection, New York, and will be the source of discussion in a show as it is juxtaposed with and against the work of ten contemporary artists. This is not the first time Norte Maar has brought historic material to Brooklyn. The Boys of Bushwick exhibition which open in April 2011 and featured the illustrations of Richard Haines, included loans from a work by Paul Cadmus and Pavel Tchelitchew. Additionally, Norte Maar has been noted for juxtaposing established artists with emerging talent as evident in it's To be Lady exhibition currently on view in New York City. The show includes historic work by Louise Nevelson, Alice Neel, Louise Bourgeios, with work by mid-career and rising stars.
