This February, Norte Maar brings forth CounterPointe 8, a collaboration between six female dance makers and six visual artists. The performances will take place at downtown Brooklyn’s Mark O'Donnell Theater at the Actors Fund Arts Center on Feb 28 + 29, Mar 1. Tickets here.
Norte Maar, a committed international think-tank dedicated to the creation, promotion, and presentation of collaborations in the disciplines of the visual, literary, and the performing arts, together with Brooklyn Ballet, present CounterPointe. This annual curated performance series features new work by women choreographers for pointe. For this, its eighth iteration, 6 women choreographers have been paired with 6 New York Metro-based women visual artists to collaborate and create both a new physical and visual work by each – investigating the process of creation, inspiration and development.
CounterPointe8 will present collaborations by Julia K Gleich with artist Mary Schwab; Mari Meade with artist Margaret Lanzetta, JoVonna Parks with artist Maud Bryt, Maiya Redding with artist Emmaline Payette, Eryn Renee Young with artist Niki Lederer. Special in this year's CounterPointe is a sixth pairing of CounterPointe London Almuna, UK-based choreographer, Deborah Kate Norris, who will be continuing her own dance scholarship by presenting a special iteration of her recent choreographic work in a collaboration with artist Anna Hymas.
Inaugurated in 2012 CounterPointe isfocused on the presentation of new works by women choreographers for the pointeshoe. The series has been celebrated for breaking new ground expanding theballet concert vocabulary, investigating new and historic territory,encouraging discussion and creating a forum for women, young or old, emergingor established, to take artistic risks.
“Defining what collaboration looks like in action is impossible, but our program is designed to encourage and indeed push choreographers and artists towards exploring new ways of making and seeing their own art. By creating a tight deadline, the hope is to limit the opportunities for "second-guessing" so that these new works will evolve spontaneously, perhaps chaotically.
We believe there should be no hierarchy of art form or taste in these processes, and that neither creator should lead the collaboration. So with minimal interference we let each team finds its own path.
On a sad note: This year we mourn the loss of past artist collaborator, Sarah Bednarek (CP '16, paired with Ursula Verduzco). We will dedicate the February 29th performance to her memory... and her birthday.

*The February 29 performance will be dedicated to the memory of artist Sarah Bednarek (CP'16 collaboration with choreographer Ursula Verduzco).

About Julia K. Gleich:
Julia K. Gleich, curator and choreographer, is a critically acclaimed choreographer, teacher, scholar interested in re-contextualizing ballet. Her company, Gleich Dances performed in the UK and US including seasons at The Broadway Theatre, Barking (Arts Council England-supported), NYC’s Joyce SoHo and Centre for Performance Research with critical notice in The New York Times, Village Voice, The New Criterion and The Brooklyn Rail. She was commissioned to create a site-specific work for the opening of St. Pancras International Eurostar station in 2007. Collaboration is a key part of her creativity. In 2004 she co-founded with curator, Jason Andrew, Norte Maar for Collaborative Projects in the Arts in Brooklyn, NY, named by Jerry Saltz as “..the closest thing to the eighties East Village.” Her practice-based research on vectors and dance was published in the Dynamic Body in Space. Her conceptual dance films have been exhibited in NYC, and Singapore. She is an advocate for women in ballet, producing annual CounterPointe performances in NY and London and mentors young choreographers each summer in Dance at Socrates in NYC. Ms. Gleich is Head of Choreography at London Studio Centre and faculty at Trinity Laban. Her training included: School of American Ballet, the Limón Institute and Cunningham Studio. She has been on faculties of several universities in the US and received the Distinguished Alumna Award 2014from the University of Utah Fine Arts. She was External Examiner, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, and Master teacher, Hikone Dance Intensive, Japan. In 2016 she was awarded a DanceUK Choreographer Observership through English National Ballet.
