NM’s 2018 Summer Artist-In-Residence: Brece Honeycutt
Now in its fourth season, Norte Maar is pleased to announce its 2018 Summer Artist-In-Residence, Brece Honeycutt. Brece joins the list of exciting artists that have included Rob de Oude ('17), husband and wife team of painter JJ Manford and mixed media artist Elisa Soliven ('16), and painter Elisabeth Condon ('15). Norte Maar’s Artist-In-Residence Program offers artists housing for a week with studio space and the Au Sable River to wade in. The program also aims to introduce artists to new communities and communities to new artists. The program is supported in part by The Friends of Norte Maar.
"I first met Brece during her residency at Pocket Utopia in Bushwick, Brooklyn in 2008," recalls NM Director Jason Andrew. "I was captivated by her unique and contemporary approach to traditional forms of weaving, knitting: her combination of fabrics and threads to capture and retell the contemporary experience."
Brece is no stranger to the Norte Maar Upstate family. In 2009 she participated as an invited artist in NM's Camp Pocket Utopia in Rouses Point where she was one of a group of artists that took over classrooms in the local elementary school and offered free classes to local children for a week. "I remember how all of us, including me," recalls Andrew, "found needle knitting to be a challenge. But I also remember by the end of the week, the kids had woven an installation that filled the school gym!
"Brece will set up a studio in the old barn at The Jay House. She will be in residence from July 8-15. Her studio will be open for the 2018 Au Sable River Valley Studio Tour, July 14 + 15.
