NM's 2017 Summer Artist-In-Residence: Rob de Oude

Now in its third season, Norte Maar is pleased to announce our 2017 Summer Artist-In-Residence, Brooklyn based painter Rob de Oude. Rob joins the list of exciting New York City based artists that have included others like last year's husband and wife team of painter JJ Manford and mixed media artist Elisa Soliven and painter Elisabeth Condon in 2015. Norte Maar’s Artist-In-Residence Program offers artists housing for a week with studio space and the Au Sable River to wade in. The program also aims to introduce artists to new communities and communities to new artists. The program is supported in part by The Friends of Norte Maar.

"I first met Rob when he walked into my gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn, in 2010," recalls NM director Jason Andrew, "Rob introduced himself and the new exhibition project he was initiating out of his studio called Camel Arts. I've been eagerly following both his artwork and his curatorial projects ever since! It's exciting to share our summer home here in Jay with Rob and his family and to add his artistry to our little Adirondack art scene we've been building here."

The paintings and drawings by Rob de Oude are composed of meticulously placed repeated lines, with the overlapping lines revealing geometric shapes and patterns. Repeatedly using a single unit, like a straight line, displays the infinite possibilities of a synchronized effort. Layered bands and grids of colors and collisions of angled lines create an illusory sense of space with shifting colors, moires effects and deceptively bending lines. de Oude mixes an intuitive use of color, rhythm, composition and layering choices with a systematic mode of painting. These juxtapositions between intuition and methodology allow for visual anomalies, while seeking an orchestrated balance.

Rob de Oude studied painting, sculpture and art history at the Hoge School voor de Kunsten in Amsterdam and SUNY Purchase, NY. Recent solo exhibitions have been at DM Contemporary in New York and The Adler Gallery in Port Washington. He has participated in group exhibitions in the US and abroad, notably at: Museum de Lakenhal, NL, Galerie Gourvennec Ogor in Marseille, France, Storefront Bushwick in Brooklyn, NY, McKenzie Fine Art in New York, NY, Galerie Thomas Hühsam in Offenbach, GR, BRIC Rotunda in Brooklyn, NY, Galerie van den Berge in Goes, NL, Pentimenti in Philadelphia, PA, and has participated in several art fairs in the US and Europe. de Oude has been featured amongst others. in the NY Post, L Magazine, Artnet Magazine, NYArts Magazine, The New Criterion, Brooklyn Magazine, Bushwick Daily, ARTNews. He has his studio in Brooklyn, NY, and is founding member and co-director of Transmitter, NY.
