Announcing NM's 2017 Dance at Socrates Resident Choreographers
Norte Maar announces the return of its fifth season of this summer dance series that brings New York-based choreographers and their dancers to the East River waterfront at Socrates Sculpture Park. Norte Maar’s Dance at Socrates, is the park’s first choreographic residency dedicated to the artistic development of choreographers and the creation and presentation of dance.
Each Monday two choreographers will begin their week-long residency in the park – encouraged to expand and develop their artistry in full view of the public. Visitors to the park enjoy not only the contemporary sculpture the park is well known for, but also cutting edge dance and movement in the making. On three Saturdays in August, audiences will see these resident choreographers on a mixed bill with invited guests in three free public performances on Saturday, Aug 5, 12, and 19 at 4pm.

Brandon Collwes >
Trained at the Pittsburgh CLO in musical theater and jazz dance, at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater when he studied George Balanchine technique, the Creative and Performing Arts High School of Pittsburgh where he started making his own choreography, and the Juilliard School and SUNY Purchase for some college. He became a member of the CDF Repertory Understudy Group in 2003 where he work closely and was trained by Merce Cunningham and Robert Swinston. He joined the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in January 2006 where he danced up until the close of the Company in 2011 in the finale Legacy World Tour. He is currently principal dancer of the Liz Gerring Dance Company, Sally Slivers and Dancers and continues to teach dance across the globe while developing and performing his own work. Eryn Renee Young is co-founder and resident choreographer of XAOC Contemporary Ballet, a New York City-based neoclassical ballet company founded in 2010. Her choreographic work has been showcased at The Ailey Citigroup Theater, the Young Choreographer’s Festival at Symphony Space, Boston Contemporary Dance Festival at the Paramount Theater, the White Wave Dumbo Dance Festival, the Martha Graham Studio Theater, the Counter/Pointe Series presented by Norte Maar, the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition, the Brooklyn Dance Festival, the Choreographer’s Canvas at Manhattan Movement and Arts Center, NYC10: an initiative for NYC Dance Week at Dixon Place, Dance New Amsterdam, Triskelion Arts Center, Steps on Broadway, the Moving Beauty Series, the Algonquin Arts Center, Peridance Capezio Center, the Boston Conservatory, the Bart Leukede Theater at Rider University, and New York University, including a solo choreography show entitled A New Era: Elements of Dance in 2009 and another in the Gallatin Arts Festival in 2012. Awards include 2015 Edward Villella Emerging Choreographers Competition at Rider University, 2015 Manhattan Community Arts Fund Grant for her ballet outreach program “Project Ignite,” 2014 Eryc Taylor Dance New Choreography Grant, selection as a mentee for the 2013 Dance/USA Institute for Leadership Training, and selection as a choreographer for the 2013 Women in Dance Series. Ms. Young holds a degree in Contemporary Ballet Choreography and Fine Art from New York University.

Liam Francis >
Born in London in 1993, Liam started dancing at a small independent dance studio when he moved to Brighton. At the age of 14 Liam joined ZooNation Dance Company and played the Lost Child in their 2009 Christmas run of ‘Into the Hoods’. As well as performing extensively for ZooNation over the next 4 years by 2013, Liam was Resident Director, Dance Captain and one of the Choreographers for the ZooNation hit show ‘Groove on Down the Road’. In 2014 Liam graduated from London Studio Centre with a First Class BA Hons Degree. Whilst at London Studio Centre Liam enjoyed a successful career as a commercial dancer, performing alongside artist such as Joe McElderry, JLS, LMFOA and Gary Barlow, appearing regularly on TV and joining Flawless for TV and live performances. During his time at London Studio Centre, Liam had developed a passion for contemporary dance and on graduating he was privileged enough to be asked to join Rambert Dance Company. As a result he has been touring the UK with the company whilst also working with choreographers such as Alexander Whitley, Mark Baldwin and Didy Veldman on new creations for future performance. As well as dancing, Liam has a real passion for choreography and collaboration and is particularly interested in how the boundaries between dance forms can be blurred.

konverjdans, a Brooklyn-based contemporary ballet company co-founded by artistic directors Amy Saunder, Jordan Miller and Tiffany Mangulabnan, is dedicated to celebrating the convergence of different art forms, backgrounds, and experiences by always creating dance in collaboration with other artists – musicians, filmmakers, visual artists, and others; to always performing with live music and highlighting the importance of musical collaboration in dance; and to performing in a wide variety of spaces, making dance accessible to diverse audiences.

Nico Brown >
Nico Brown is a dance artist originally from rural Illinois. His work is often described as minimal, formal, and irrevocably queer. Brown is a New York Live Arts Fresh Tracks recipient, a Makehouse Sponsored Artist and a Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship recipient. His work has been presented at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, La Mama Experimental Theatre, New York Live Arts, Gibney Dance Center, and Movement Research at the Judson Church. As a performer he has danced for Jon Kinzel, Jennifer Monson, Wally Cardona + Jennifer Lacey, and Renee Wadleigh. He studies regularly with Janet Panetta. He holds an MFA in Dance and a BFA in Theatre Stage Management from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. (Photo: Scott Shaw)

Julia K. Gleich is a choreographer, teacher, scholar and mathematics aficionado. She is interested in collaboration, illuminating the relationships between the traditional and the contemporary, and scrapping aesthetic labels. In 1996 she founded Gleich Dances. In 2004 she co-founded Norte Maar with curator Jason Andrew. She produces CounterPointe annually. She is Head of Choreography at London Studio Centre, faculty at Trinity Laban, and is a 2014 Distinguish Alumna of University of Utah College of Fine Arts. Her extended work Martha (The Searchers), in collaboration with Guggenheim Fellow Elana Herzog, will premiere in New York this October at the Duffy Theater in the Mark Morris Dance Center.
