NM Announces Its Summer Artists-In-Residence

Norte Maar is pleased to introduce our 2016 Summer Artists-In-Residence. The husband and wife team of painter JJ Manford and mixed media artist Elisa Soliven will be in residence at the Jay House, Norte Maar's summer home in the Adirondacks from July 11-18, 2016.  Norte Maar's Artists-In-Residence Program offers artists housing for a week with studio space and the Au Sable River to wade in. The program also aims to introduce artists to new communities and communities to new artists. The program is supported in part by The Friends of Norte Maar. NM's 2015 Artists-In-Residence was painter Elisabeth Condon.

Norte Maar, JJ Manford, artist in residence, Jay, New York, Adirondack

Born in 1983, JJ Manford is an artist living and working in Brooklyn. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, in 2006, a Post Baccalaureate degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his MFA from Hunter College in 2013. He has exhibited extensively within the US, and abroad, including with John Davis Gallery in Hudson, NY., Freight and Volume Gallery, Canada, and One River Gallery in Englewood, NJ, to name a few. This summer he will have a solo show at John Davis Gallery in Hudson, NY, entitled "Wanderers and Wildflowers". JJ is also a co-founder of the Brooklyn based artist collective Underdonk, and has organized projects independently, which have been featured in Hyperallergic, Two Coats of Paint, and The Huffington Post. Most recently, he led a critique as a MFASO visiting artist at Hunter College, NY, and as a visiting Painting Critic for Bruce High Quality Foundation University. JJ is currently an adjunct professor at Pratt Institute, where he teaches a foundation class in color theory and design.

Elisa Soliven born in New York City; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received an MFA in Painting from Hunter College in 2011 and a BA from Bryn Mawr College. Her work has been reviewed by Two Coats of Paint, Art Critical, Hyperallergic, the New York Times, and the Village Voice. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Nudashank, Baltimore; Daily Operation at Bull & Ram, NYC; Grizzly, Grizzly, Philadelphia; Outlet, Brooklyn; and Sardine, Brooklyn. She received the William L. Metcalf Award for a young artist from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2012 and had a solo show of recent work at John Davis Gallery in Hudson in 2014. Her works are in the collections of The Sol LeWitt Collection, Chester, CT, The Brooklyn Rail Collection, Brooklyn, NY and the Norte Maar Collection, Brooklyn, NY. She is also a co-founder of the Bushwick artist collective, Underdonk.
