Our June edition of Authors and Artists had us drawing with chalk outside the Bushwick Library. After the reading of a story on the steps we were joined by painter Julie Torres and sculptor Wendy Klemperer who brought all kinds of new ideas and inspiration to our drawings. Here’s a few photos of our afternoon, which unfortunately was hampered by sporadic rain showers.

Audra Wolowiec, the artist behind Norte Maar’s recent commission Concrete Sound, worked with young artists to explore thinking about sound and art. The kids each composed visual scores, using the standard form of sheet music in a plethora of interesting ways. Each artist developed their own imagery into a silent song of sorts, with the help of Wolowiec’s guidance and discussion of her practice, which often uses sound either literally or conceptually.

Artist Libby Hartle-Tyrrell join us at Bushwick Impact for a new session of Authors and Artists. With glue and colored paper, Libby presented an activity based on the whimsical painter Wassily Kandinsky, who is credited with painting the first purely-abstract works.
