Our June edition of Authors and Artists had us drawing with chalk outside the Bushwick Library. After the reading of a story on the steps we were joined by painter Julie Torres and sculptor Wendy Klemperer who brought all kinds of new ideas and inspiration to our drawings. Here’s a few photos of our afternoon, which unfortunately was hampered by sporadic rain showers.

Authors and Artists: May Edition

Our monthly kids art program, Authors and Artists, returned for it’s May Edition at the Bushwick Library. We talked about ideas of color and pattern and read Elmer and Rose, by David McKee. The book celebrates the uniqueness of each individual as Elmer the Elephant meets a new girl elephant — who happens to be pink! These ideas of uniqueness were discussed and how this may be reflected in our own lives as we meet people of different color and uniqueness.

The children then translated these ideas into the creation of colorful and uniquely patterned pinwheels!

Authors and Artists: Flowers to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Authors and Artists celebrates Cinco de Mayo!

For our April installment of Authors and Artists, we made brightly colored Dahlia flowers-Mexico’s National flower in celebration of Cinco de Mayo (the holiday commemorating the triumph of a small Mexican army over French forces in the 1862 battle at Puebla).

After Norte Maar’s Director, Jason Andrew, read a short story illustrating the vibrant and festive history and traditions surrounding Cinco de Mayo, artist and project assistant Andrew Szobody lead an instructional workshop on the making of the Dahlia flower out of folded and cut crepe paper. We discovered that the Dahlia Flower is used to decorate parade floats and dances and now we have our own decorating our own homes!

Authors and Artists is a free monthly program that invites local professional artists, musicians, dancers, craft makers, architects, etc, to teach and explore books and the arts with the children and families in our neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn. Authors and Artists is presented in collaboration with the Bushwick Library and is sponsored in part by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council, Inc. (BAC).

Authors and Artists: a visit by Libby Hartle-Tyrrell

Today, a beautiful spring day, Libby Hartle-Tyrrell and her special assistant Violet returned as a visiting artist for our March installment of Authors + Artists at the Bushwick Library. The afternoon began with a reading of the children’s book Sandy’s Circus, a story about one of America’s great and innovative sculptors Alexander Calder.  Written by Tanya Lee Stone and illustrated by Boris Kulikov the book offered the perfect bridge to the children building their very own colorful and well-balanced mobiles!

Authors and Artists joined by artist Audra Wolowiec

Audra Wolowiec, the artist behind Norte Maar’s recent commission Concrete Sound, worked with young artists to explore thinking about sound and art. The kids each composed visual scores, using the standard form of sheet music in a plethora of interesting ways. Each artist developed their own imagery into a silent song of sorts, with the help of Wolowiec’s guidance and discussion of her practice, which often uses sound either literally or conceptually.

Local artist Seth Caplan transforms Bushwick Library into print shop for kids.

The first Authors and Artists program of the new year featured guest artist Seth Caplan, who transformed the Bushwick Library in a print shop.

After a brief discussion about monsters, the kids were invited to sketch a fanciful beast. For further inspiration, Norte Maar Director Jason Andrew read the classic book  Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Next Seth demonstrated a technique whereby the kids transferred their drawing onto Styrofoam for printing. “Lino cuts a la styrofoam and pencils,” cried Seth. Let the printing begin!

The end results were astonishing!

NYSCA awards Norte Maar a grant to continue its work with children.

Authors and Artists program at Norte Maar

For the second year in a row, Norte Maar has been awarded a grant from 2012 Local Arts Support. Panelists from the Brooklyn Arts Council have award Norte Maar $2,125 in support of our Authors and Artists program in 2012. Local Arts Support is funded by the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and administered through the Brooklyn Arts Council.

Since 2006, Norte Maar has been active in the Bushwick community forging partnerships with neighborhood groups to further awarness of the arts and foster artistic expression. Authors and Artists originated from a collaboration between Norte Maar and Bushwick Impact, a family resource center in Bushwick empowering local parents to maximize their children’s potential. Due to budget cuts, Bushwick Impact closed during the summer of 2010. Norte Maar rallied to rescue the program and formed a collaboration with the Bushwick Library to continue these monthly community arts events.

Holiday Edition of Authors and Artists

For the December edition of the Authors and Artists Program, our little artists gathered at the Bushwick Library to create works anticipating the upcoming holiday. Jason Andrew read William Joyce’s vibrant storybook Santa Calls. The kids created their own version of cut-out Christmas trees and experimented with geometry to create personalized snowflakes.

Authors and Artists is a free monthly program originally designed and created in association with Bushwick Impact, a family and neighborhood support organization, as an effort to improve conditions for children and families in challenging city neighborhoods. Norte Maar invites local professional artists, dancers, craft makers, architects, etc, to teach and explore the arts with children and families in our Bushwick neighborhood.

Painter Hermine Ford joins us for Authors and Artists

The painter Hermine Ford joined us today for our Authors and Artists Program at the Bushwick Library. Jason Andrew selected a new book, appropriate to the upcoming holiday, to share with the kids titled Thanksgiving Rules by Laurie Friedman and illustrated by Teresa Murfin. Then Hermine spoke with the kids about how nature influences her work. Hermine brought in two examples of her work, a small painting and a framed drawing. The kids thought it was amazing! Next, Jason and Hermine with the help of our terrific program assistant Silvia Cruz, led a project where by the kids made artwork by tracing and rubbing a variety of leaves collected from the nearby Maria Hernandez Park. A special thanks to Hermine Ford for sharing your time and talents with us!

Authors and Artists with Libby Hartle-Tyrrell

Artist Libby Hartle-Tyrrell join us at Bushwick Impact for a new session of Authors and Artists. With glue and colored paper, Libby presented an activity based on the whimsical painter Wassily Kandinsky, who is credited with painting the first purely-abstract works.
