Long Island City, NY — Socrates Sculpture Park, internationally recognized for its large-scale sculpture and multi-media installations, partners with Norte Maar, renowned for their cross-disciplinary collaborative projects, in a new summer series that brings New York-based choreographers and their dancers to the East River waterfront at Socrates. Called Dance at Socrates, this program is the first residency in the park dedicated to the creation and presentation of dance.

Each week during the month of August, a different choreographer will be in residence at Socrates Sculpture Park to develop a site-specific dance on a newly constructed stage within the park. Visitors to the park will enjoy not only the unique contemporary sculpture the park is well known for, but also cutting edge dance and movement in the making. Throughout their creative process, participating choreographers in Dance at Socrates will be in full view of the public, who can then experience the fully produced performance every Saturday throughout August.

Dance at Socrates also supports aspiring choreographers by pairing teens (ages 13-18) with experienced choreographers each week. Last May, Norte Maar announced an open call to teen choreographers for one-week residencies alongside experienced choreographers, creating an opportunity for mentorship, experience and exposure.

“The water’s edge at Socrates Sculpture Park creates a magical setting that has inspired visual artists for more than two decades, and today we are thrilled to open our gates to Norte Maar for the creation of dance. For Dance at Socrates, Norte Maar has selected four extraordinary choreographers whose unique styles will activate the park every day in August.  We are pleased to make that process transparent for all visitors, and eager to experience the newly completed works every Saturday.” – John Hatfield, Executive Director, Socrates Sculpture Park

Visitors to the park will enjoy not only the unique contemporary sculpture the park is well known for, but also cutting edge dance and movement in the making.

About Socrates Sculpture Park /
For over 25 years Socrates Sculpture Park has been a model of public art production, community activism, and socially inspired place-making. Known for fostering experimental and visionary artworks, Socrates has exhibited more than 1,000 artists on its five waterfront acres, providing them the financial support, materials, equipment, and space necessary to create large-scale works in the public realm. Open 365 days a year from dawn till dusk, the park is an epicenter of cultural programming, as a producer of contemporary exhibitions, a presenter of a multi-disciplinary performance series, and an educator of more than 10,000 children and teens each year – all free. The park’s existence is based on the belief that reclamation, revitalization and creative expression are essential to the survival, humanity and improvement of our urban environment.
